A high-profile New Jersey divorce could result in one of the largest matrimonial settlements in state and U.S. history has taken another turn, with new details emerging about a woman linked to hedge fund billionaire John Overdeck.
Lauren Phillips, a former competitive fencer who owns a fencing academy in Millburn, filed a defamation lawsuit in 2024 against Overdeck’s estranged wife, Laura Overdeck. Phillips had also served as a fencing coach to one of the couple’s three children for several years.
In the suit, Phillips alleged that Laura Overdeck made statements to clients, friends, and business associates accusing her of having a relationship with John Overdeck and contributing to the breakdown of the couple’s marriage. She also alleged that statements were made accusing her of threatening people with knives.
Phillips claimed the allegations damaged both her personal reputation and her fencing academy’s standing. The lawsuit was later dismissed in Essex County Superior Court after Phillips failed to continue legal proceedings.
Some allegations described in the lawsuit also surfaced in police body-camera footage recorded outside the Overdecks’ Short Hills home a year earlier. During the incident, Laura Overdeck made allegations concerning a woman involved with her husband. John Overdeck acknowledged that he was dating the woman but denied any sexual relationship.
The Overdecks continue battling their significant matrimonial dispute in Newark family court. Laura Overdeck is seeking $6.2 billion related to her husband’s interest in Two Sigma, the successful hedge fund he co-founded.
At issue is whether Laura Overdeck is entitled to a share of the increase in value of her husband’s Two Sigma holdings during their 20-year marriage. She reportedly rejected a $633 million settlement offer, maintaining that the increase in value during the marriage should be considered a marital asset.
John Overdeck testified Wednesday that he considered the proposed settlement fair and sufficient to provide for his estranged wife. If Laura Overdeck ultimately receives the $6.2 billion she is seeking, the settlement would rank among the largest in U.S. history.
